Official vs Unofficial Mobile Phone Prices in Bangladesh
In Bangladesh, the same phone model is often sold at two different prices — an official price and an unofficial (grey-market) price. Here's exactly what each means and which one you should buy.
What is "Official"?
Phones imported through the manufacturer's authorized distributor (e.g., Apple Gadgets BD for Apple, Smart Technologies for Samsung). They:
- Are registered with BTRC (Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission)
- Carry the full brand warranty (typically 12–24 months)
- Have all duties + VAT paid
- Are typically priced 15–30% above unofficial imports
What is "Unofficial" (Grey Market)?
Phones imported outside official channels — typically by individuals or small importers. They:
- May not be registered with BTRC (risk of being blocked)
- Typically carry only seller warranty (3–6 months)
- Are typically priced 15–30% below the official price
- Sometimes include better international features (regional unlocks, dual-physical-SIM where official is e-SIM-only, etc.)
BTRC and IMEI Registration
Since October 2021, BTRC enforces NEIR (National Equipment Identity Register). Unregistered IMEIs can be blocked after 10 days. Before buying:
- Dial
*16161#followed by IMEI to verify registration - Ask the seller for the BTRC sticker / receipt
- Some unofficial sellers offer "BTRC registration included" — verify it's genuine before paying
Price gap examples (Bangladesh, 2026)
- iPhone 17 Pro: Official BDT 1,84,999 vs Unofficial ~BDT 1,40,000 (~24% lower)
- iPhone 16: Official BDT 1,19,999 vs Unofficial ~BDT 92,000 (~23% lower)

Which should you buy?
Buy official if: long-term use (3+ years), peace of mind on warranty, planning to resell, brand-conscious.
Buy unofficial if: price-sensitive, short-term use, trust the importer, planning to upgrade in 1–2 years.
